What is a Caracara?

The Northern Caracara is the name
now accepted by most birding
professionals and scientists although
it is probably most often called just
Caracara.
It also has been known by many
scientific names, and new revisions
may be made soon.

Polyborus plancus
Ployborus plancus audubonii
Caracara plancus
Caracara cheriway
Caracara cheriway audubonii


The accepted and appropriate name is
now listed as
Caracara cheriway.
Other Interesting Facts

> Caracara are often thought to be scavengers, but actually
are very adequate hunters eating a wide variety of
mammals, snakes, bugs, and fish.

>During the 1970's DDT decimated large populations of
birds, Caracara were listed as being affected by that
pesticide.

>Most people will never see a Caracara- They are sneaky
and located in areas not commonly utilized except by
ranchers and hikers.

>Florida doesn't have the only population of Northern
Caracara, they are common in the Southwest, through
central America, and in upper south America.  New research
thinks they might be different subspecies.
